It's pretty simple, because he played the numbers in the lottery, Hurley wasn't supposed to be able to get on that plane. Watch his "Exodus" flashback. Everything that could possibly prevent him from boarding the plane (the alarm clock burning out, the full elevator, the car battery dieing out, and other obstiacles) happened yet he still got on the plane. I remembered thinking that the Others might be wary of him for this exact reason, and sure enough, they let him go in "Live Together, Die Alone." I'm thinking now that he's thwarting destiny.
