3x5 - "The Cost Of Living" Flashbacks

I love Eko's flashbacks. Of all the taillies we met last year, his by far have the most substance and were some of the best we've seen on the show.

As great as this flashback was, I can pretty much sum this up in one point - Eko has stood by every sin he has committed as he did it only to stay alive, which is why he avoided facing any sort of judgement for so long. The opening flashback with him stealing food for his brother, killing the old man so his brother didn't have to, killing those men in the church while impersonating a priest - all of it was so he could stay alive. As we clearly see in the present, these sins will come back to haunt him.

I think that with Eko, he didn't do the things to survive, but to keep someone else alive. The first two, it was his brother, the last time it was to keep the parish alive, and everytime he got hassled for it. He had to do the dirty work to save others and only gets punished for it. This is in opposition to Locke's not killing the kid on the Marijuan farm. It's really taking the idea of right and wrong and showing that it can be very different based on your perspective. I think the monster is wrong, probably just like the others are, but, of course, that's from my perspective.

That's true. Eko also did many things to protect his brother, Yemi as well as himself which is why he feels he has done no wrong. Then again, one can make the argument that nothing can justify taking another life.
